First Annual Informal Ride Around Winnipesaukee – Sept 27th
Looks like the weather is going to be terrible this weekend (September 27 & 28)! Maybe we'll try again in the spring....
Fall is a great time for bicycle riding in the Lakes Region, and this year we want to encourage everyone to Ride Around Winnipesaukee. This is not a sponsored or officially sanctioned event – it’s simply an “Informal Ride” day. The ride will not have an official starting or ending location – simply start near where you live (or where you’re staying), and start riding around the lake. This year we are asking everyone to go in a clockwise direction around the lake (next year we’ll go in the opposite direction).
Lakes Region Bicycling does not assume any responsibility for the safety of anyone that decides to ride on this day – you are on your own!
There won’t be any “SAG” support, so bring your own drinks, energy bars, repair kits, etc. Since this is an “informal ride”, you can ride as little or as long as you want, and there isn’t an official start or end time. We just want to get as many people out and riding around the lake as possible to show the state and local governments that we support the creation of safe shoulders all the way around Winnipesaukee, and the establishment of an official “Bike Route” around the lake.
Please mark the day on your calendar and tell all the riders you know about the event – this includes serious riders, weekenders, and family groups with children.
If you are able to participate, please drop us a note (
) so we can document how many participants we have so we can present this information to the state and local governments.
If you would like to ride with a group, we are suggesting a number of “informal starting points” at various locations around the lake. Just show up at one of the following locations before the approximate departure time listed and maybe you’ll meet up with some other people who want to Ride Around Winnipesaukee!
Here are a few suggested “informal starting points”:
Intersection of Route 11, 11A and 11B – Departure at approx 8am. This is the intersection with Patrick’s Pub and Sawyers. You are on your own for parking, but you could try the Meadowbrook Performing Arts center and the parking lot at the intersection. Assemble in the Patrick’s Pub lot.
Meredith Town Docks – Departure at approx 8am. This area has a lot of parking at, and near, the docks. Assemble at the docks.
Ellacoya State Park – Departure at approx 8:30am. You are on your own for parking, but there is usually room to park near the entrance. Assemble at the entrance to the state park.
Downtown Wolfeboro - Departure at approx 8am. There is lots of parking available in and around this area. Assemble at the train station.
Lakes Region Bicycling is dedicated to providing information about bicycling in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and acting as an advocate for improving conditions for bicycle riders througout the region.
In addition to providing the best directories and listings for bicycle riders in the region, we will also be encouraging local and state governments to create wider shoulders in the region to promote safe bicycling. We believe that wide shoulders all the away around Lake Winnipesaukee and the other lakes in the region will increase the number of bicycle riders, help make the Lakes Region a favorite destination for bicycling - and as an added benefit, we believe it will help the economy of the region.
